Mebendazole is a pharmaceutical drug made specifically for treating worm infections. It is highly effective and can be used to treat many different types of worms including pinworms or threadworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
You can take Mebendazole in a number of ways; chewable tablets, chocolate squares, or as a flavored suspension. This makes it easy to give to infected children.
Mebendazole stops worms from ingesting sugar and other nutrients from the human body. This removes their energy source and gradually they become immobile and die. The dead worms are then removed from the body in bowel motions.
As mebendazole does not kill worm eggs, a second dose is generally taken 2 weeks later to kill any worms that have hatched since the first dose.
The good thing about Mebendazole is it is poorly absorbed by the human body and has no systemic effects.
Most people will experience no problems with this medication; however, some mild side effects such as transient abdominal pain, diarrhea, mild headaches, and dizziness have been reported.
It should be noted that Mebendazole is not to be taken by pregnant women.
To get rid of pinworms or threadworms, Mebendazole is a one-dose treatment. This means you simply take a 100mg dosage once and the dosage is the same for both adults and children.
As discussed earlier, the treatment is repeated 2 weeks later.
If you are taking mebendazole to treat whipworm, roundworm or hookworm the dosage is slightly different. You will need to take one 100mg dose morning and night for 3 consecutive days.
